Floral Frenzy

Welcome spring! After a monumental snowfall this winter, the blooms in the Great Basin are sure to flourish. In addition to enjoying those vibrant hues along winding trails and up sky-high mountainsides, we have a few more ideas to get that full floral sensory overload that you may be craving.

Flowery sights and sounds

With the area’s seemingly endless hiking possibilities, there are a few favorites that are fit for any level. Galena Creek Trail in south Reno is an arborist’s dream following the babbling waterway as it meanders through sagebrush, meadows and pine forest. For a beautiful vista (and possibly lingering snow), hike Tahoe Meadows on Mount Rose Highway. Checkout the Springtime Showers story on page 52 for even more Sierra treks.

The Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Garden is located within Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno. Here you’ll find several gardens filled with native flora. In Gardnerville, take a stroll through the Main Street District lined with beautiful flower baskets grown by local students. Smell the sweetness

Head to Bumblebee Blooms Flower Boutique in Reno’s Riverwalk District to enjoy truly charming arrangements. They have a great gift shop filled with darling mementos and fragrant candles to keep the sweet smells lingering for hours. If you go, be sure to stop in Reno eNVy just next door for the signature clothing brand we Nevadans adore. bumblebeeblooms.com; renoenvy.com

If you’re in south Reno, The Freckled Frog in the South Creek Shopping Center has a variety of the most delicious smelling bath salts. The pretty purple lavender is one of my favorites!  thefreckledfrogreno.com

Petal to the touch

Feeling like you want to dawn something floral? Head to Trunk Show in Tahoe City carrying the cutest handmade jewelry and tons of other flowery finds. In Midtown, Neverender and Sierra Belle embrace the trendy fashion with flowing shirts, rompers, scarves, jackets and more stylish clothes and accessories. tahoetrunkshow.com; neverenderreno.com; shopsierrabelle.com

A taste of something verdant

On those brisk springtime mornings, warm up with a lavender latte from Coffeebar. With locations in Tahoe, Truckee and Reno, this Italian-inspired cafe has a full menu of drinks, breakfast and lunch goodies. The herbal teas at Hub Tea Bar in downtown Reno are a great choice, too! coffeebar.com; hubcoffeeroasters.com

For some delicious meals with a sprinkling of floral delight, snag a table at Old Granite Street Eatery where you just may find an edible flower or two on your plate from City Green Gardens, a local urban farm. Jimmy’s Restaurant at The Landing Resort on the shores of South Lake Tahoe has also been known to incorporate the fun, colorful garnish. oldgranitestreeteatery.com; thelandingtahoe.com

Whether it’s spying the pretty foliage in their natural state, or enjoying the sweet scent and flavor, you are sure to have a flowery-good time in the Sierra!
